Justin Arias Named Starting Quarterback For Cougars

College of the Canyons head coach Garett Tujague named quarterback Justin Arias the starter for Saturday’s season opener at Antelope Valley College today. Arias, a grey shirt freshman from Agoura Hills, beat out last seasons part-time starter Justin Morales, as well as fellow grey shirt freshman Cam Coon for the job after weeks of speculation over who the Cougars starter would be.

“I’m pretty confident,” Arias said while talking about the upcoming matchup with AVC. “We’ve been preparing all week and I think hard work is going to pay off.”

Arias thrived during his senior season in 2008 at Agoura High School. The 6’2″ signal caller threw 19 touchdowns, and also threw just one interception. He also passed for more than 2,000 yards on a team that also featured COC All-American candidate Justin Cudworth, and University of Southern California starter Kevin Graf.

Tujague said the decision came down to who was the most prepared for game action this weekend. “I think Justin’s done a great job of preparing himself in the offseason. He has a great understanding of the offense and of who we’re trying to get the ball to. He has all the perfect elements to be the starting quarterback this Saturday.”

The Cougars are coming off a disappointing season in 2009, one in which neither Morales or former Cougar Eric Brown ever seemed comfortable under center for COC. The Cougars also went into the season last year with a plan to split time between Morales and Brown at QB, a situation Tujague has mentioned he does not want to repeat in 2010.
