Can’t shake that freshmen fifteen? Well, you’re not alone. One of the biggest hurdles college students face is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As the semester progresses, we all get a little too comfortable and ease up on our normal eating plans or exercise regiments. Luckily, the Cougar Mentor program as well as a local personal trainer and nutritionist have come up with some quick tips for staying healthy throughout the semester.

Alyssa Gresham, member of the Cougar Mentor program at College of the Canyons, organizes events all around the campus and recently put together an event geared towards eating healthy and staying fit. When discussing the Cougar Mentor Program’s most recent event Alyssa stated, “We want to promote being healthy and we decided it would be a great idea to get the word out about how to be healthy in a more creative way.” Personal trainer and nutritionist of Life Fitness and Nutrition, Jennifer Proper, has scavenged the College of the Canyons Valencia campus looking for exercise options and opportunities.

“Students are so busy. I would say take advantage of the track. Run around the track, walk around the track, do some body weight exercises, get anything you can get in within the short amount of time you have,” said Proper.

Even if students are crunched for time, according to Jennifer, they can spread their workouts throughout the day. “The thing about exercise is that it’s cumulative. You don’t have to do a whole hour at one time. You can do ten minutes, twenty minutes, whatever you can manage throughout the day.”

If you are completely lost and do not know where to start, here are Jennifer’s Five College Wellness Tips: exercise daily, eat breakfast, eat balanced meals, drink lots of water and take your vitamins. So the next time you have some down time around campus, put these healthy tips and tricks to good use.
