Whether students have realized it or not, College of the Canyons has got a famous composer on its hands. Most students on campus know him as Professor, but few know him as Dr. Daniel Catan, composer. A teacher in the music department at College of the Canyons, Catan attempts to evenly divide his time among school and writing. With three successful operas under his belt, Catan is ready to release his fourth opera, Il Postino.

Based on the popular 1994 Italian film, Il Postino reveals the dilemmas of a shy young postman working in a quaint Italian fishing village. Writing Il Postino was no easy task. Catan juggled family and teaching, but after four years, he finally completed his latest work. “[LA Opera] commissioned this piece five years ago, and it takes years to bring it to fruition. It took so long because I don’t work full time,” said Catan. Along with the talent and devotion that Catan invests into each opera, he works off no commission, which clearly illustrates his true passion for story telling and the arts.

Some students may shy away from opera or the arts, but Catan describes his modern opera as student-friendly. Catan said, “It is extremely accessible. I think people will really like it if they see it, especially because most know the story. But also, there are twenty-dollar tickets for students.” To purchase tickets for Daniel Catan’s opera, Il Postino, visit LAOpera.com.
