From catching pop fly’s in the outfield, to smacking homers out of the stadium, Melanie Abzun has been one of the most consistent players for the COC softball team.

Abzun is the starting left fielder for the Cougars as well as their leadoff hitter. She currently has a .423 batting average and has tallied six home runs on the season.

After a successful four years at Crescenta Valley High School, where she earned All-Pacific League first team honors, she decided the next best step in her softball career would be to attend College of the Canyons.

“I heard it was a really good program and it was a good decision for (me) to come down and play,” Abzun said. “The girls are all competitive and we all want to go as far as we can and win a championship.”

Her coach John Wismath said some of the things that make her such a special player is her speed and the way she “plays every play like it’s her last play.

“Mel is pretty mature for her age,” Wismath said. “She always want to find out what she can do to get better.”

Abzun is currently in her sophomore year at COC and said she has been in contact with several four year schools about joining their softball programs when she transfers next season.

Along with her success on the field, she has also been a knocking it out the park in the classroom. She maintained 3.5 GPA throughout high school and is currently studying criminal justice at COC. Following her Softball Career she hopes to attend law school and eventually become an attorney.

“I am really interested in the criminal system and the injustices involved,” Abzun said. “I have a drive for learning and standing up for what’s right.”

Abzun did say that she spends most her time practicing but when she does have free time she enjoys photography. She owns a professional camera and whenever she travels or is hanging out with friends always like take a few good pictures.

After finishing the regular season with a 28-11-1 record, Abzun and the entire COC softball team are preparing for their playoff game against Southwestern College this weekend. The games will be played at Southwestern and it will be played with a best two out of three format on May 5-6.
