Elfie Hummel, one of the first instructors hired to teach at College of the Canyons died March 4th, 2011.

Hummel was among 31 teachers hired on September 1, 1969. Hummel taught French, German, and Literature, before finally retiring in 1995. She spent a large part of retirement traveling.

Hummel established the college’s very successful annual World Culture Festival bringing community members and students to campus to learn about the cultural heritage of others and celebrating the joy of diversity.

Longtime COC Biology instructor Don Takeda remembered his former colleague. “She had a real passion for teaching, and she retained over the years, the incredible drive and energy of our very first faculty.” said Takeda.

Another founding member Al Adelini also reflected on Hummel’s early tenure at the college. “In those early days”, explained Adelini,”you could often find Elfi chaperoning college dances or even selling tickets at COC football games. The college was a big part of her life.”

Hummel’s family said no public services are scheduled, and expressions of sympathy can be made by making donations to a favorite charity in her name.

Hummel was born in St. Polten, Austria and earned her PhD from the University of Vienna.
