Santa Clarita has lost another one of its own. 18 year old PFC Jake William Suter of Stevenson Ranch was killed Friday, while serving with his Marine Corps unit in Afghanistan.

News of Suter’s death came as a shock to attendees of a Memorial Day event on Monday as SCV Veterans Memorial Committee president, Bob Kellar, asked for a moment of silence.

In an interview with The Signal newspaper, Suter’s father explained that details surrounding his son’s death were currently under investigation. The 2009 West Ranch High School graduate had been in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom for less than one week when he was killed.

A candlelight prayer vigil to honor the young man is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2nd, on Bates Place near Suter’s home. Attendees are asked to park on Kavenagh Lane to ensure Bates Place is clear for the vigil.

A Facebook page, “R.I.P. Jake Suter” , has been set up for all those wishing to share their memories and to pay tribute to him.

Suter is the second soldier from Stevenson Ranch to have fallen in Afghanistan in three months. He is survived by his parents, Michelle and Chris Upthank.
