VALENCIA — A two vehicle accident shut down both northbound lanes of Rockwell Canyon Road in front of College of the Canyons’ Valencia Campus for close to an hour on Wednesday afternoon.

The two vehicles involved, a blue Nissan Altima and a blue GMC Suburban, made contact near an exit from the Valencia Campus’ north parking lots, less than 300 feet from the Performing Arts Center. The Nissan was turning left onto Rockwell, crossing southbound traffic, when it was struck by the southbound traveling GMC. The collision sent parts of the GMC’s bumper and Nissan’s door scattering across the sidewalk in front of the school. The accident occurred around 12:30pm, and deputy’s from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene within minutes.

A passenger in the Nissan was taken by ambulance to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital after complaining of neck pain. It did not appear that the side-impact airbags inflated on the Nissan’s passenger door, but the driver’s side airbags fully deployed. A family of four, including two young children, were in the GMC. No other occupants were injured. As of 1:30, all four lanes of Rockwell had been re-opened.
