Local leaders gathered at the Hyatt Regency Valencia this past week to celebrate some of Santa Clarita’s top newsmakers. The awards ceremony covered the last two years of news––2008 and 2009––and celebrated the people who made those years newsworthy.

The event was not only geared towards honoring the newsmakers of Santa Clarita, but also to raise money for the Randy Wicks First Amendment Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships to high school seniors planning to major in communications. Attendees were able to purchase raffle tickets and participate in the raffle or donate directly to the Randy Wicks Scholarship Foundation.

Winners of the night included:

Laurie Ender for 2008 Newsmaker of the Year

Cameron Smyth for 2009 Newsmaker of the Year

SCV Senior Center for Organization of the Year

Santa Clarita City Council for Most Controversial

Marc Winger for Friend of the Press

Cary Quashen for Community Service

Jim Backer for Behind the Scenes

Six Flags Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor for Business of the Year

John Shaffery for Businessperson of the Year

Saugus Girls Cross Country for Sports Team of the Year
