It’s ‘Oratorical’ time again

Optimist International is a worldwide volunteer organization made up of more than 2,500 charter clubs. Members work each day to make the future brighter by bringing out the best in children, their communities, and in themselves.

The first official Optimist Club was formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1911. The association of clubs that is known today as Optimist International was formed in 1919, and In 1920 Optimist International became A Full-fledged organization. The Greater SCV Optimist Club was chartered in 1997. It’s mission? To help children, and provide positive role models and mentors to the young men and women in the Santa Clarita community.

The Optimist Club hosts many events to help youth such as scholarship Contests, Optimist Junior Golf, childhood cancer campaign, internet safety, as well as various community activities.

An  event the Optimist club hosts each year is called the Oratorical World Championship, where students under the age of 18  enter a contest by submitting a speech on the pre-assigned topic to their local Optimist Club.

The topic for the 2016-2017 school year was, “What the World Gains from Optimism.” 

The winners of this contest got scholarships toward their college education.
