This weekend there are a few new movies hitting theaters including “Now You See Me 2”, However, this movie was just a bunch of hocus pocus. (1 1/2 * out of 4)
Director Jon M. Chu (G.I Joe: Retaliation) directs this sequel which is the follow up to the 2013 smash hit of the same title.
You have to have had some knowledge of the first film in order to understand this one. It begins with a trick being performed by Lionel Shrike who was a master magician. We see a young Rhodes watching his dad trying to escape from a safe dropped from a bridge with dire consequences resulting. Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman) was reporting on this.
We fast forward to the present day where we see Daniel follow “Eye” symbols in a sewer only told by a voice to hang in there if he wanted to become the leader of the Horsemen. As he returns to his apartment we are introduced to the newcomer Lula (Lizzy Caplan) who breaks into his apartment. She is the comic relief of the group is and funny at times.
All of the other Horsemen return as well including Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Meritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson) and the young Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) Also, Mark Ruffalo returns as FBI agent and Horsemen leader Dylan Rhodes.
After being in hiding for almost two years the group reunites and has been training for something “big” but has no idea what it is. In order to get back in the game, the team goes to a company’s convention which was exposing customer’s privacy.
During the escape somehow they find themselves in China with no idea how they got there. They are greeted by some bad guys and take them to see the villain of the film Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe). He then says he wants the group to steal a computer chip that could access any computer in the world. For me personally Radcliffe’s acting was not very believable.
When they get to the facility, the Horsemen steal the chip and on the way out they were searched.. The magic that was employed was very slick and cool.
Thaddeous and Dylan team up together and do have some great moments during the film, but overall, I think this movie falls short because of the story and acting. As the film is nearing its climax which takes place in London, there are a very few cool tricks by members of the Horsemen all over the city which the police are trying to track. Not only is Mabry after them, but also the FBI.
I was definitely a fan of the first film, but unfortunately the best thing about the sequel was the effects which is a shame because it could have been MUCH better considering the full cast returned.
If you are looking for something to see, I would make this second or third or your list, and I will see you at the movies.
