Six years ago today, Jack Dorsey (@jack) laid out the design for a new social networking site that would become a phenomenon.

Back in March of 2006, Twitter, first known as Twttr,  was first put to use when Dorsey tweeted its famous first tweet: “inviting coworkers”.

Twitter released details providing stats reflecting the company’s growth to 140 million active users that produce a hefty 340 million tweets per day over the 140 million tweets Twitter had reported last year.

A few days after the start of Twitter, Dorsey shared his design via Flickr stating, “I’m happy this idea has taken root; I hope it thrives.”

Only a few months into 2012, Twitter has already shown much promise into the continuing growth, including the recent addition of Posterous. We look forward to what the rest of the year brings.
