When Chunli Fu of China decided to download Where’s My Water? Free, he had not only downloaded the popular Disney game, instead, Chunli had downloaded the 25 billionth app from Apple’s App Store.
Although the app may have been free, Chunli’s impeccable sense of timing landed him a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card.
Apple’s “the App Store Countdown to 25 Billion Apps” may have been a promotional stunt to encourage iOS users to continue to download their product, but for this one lucky user, it became more.
“We’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve this historic milestone of 25 billion apps downloaded,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users.”
The company’s press release stated that 550,000 apps are available in 123 countries to more than 315 million Apple portables, “with more than 170,000 native iPad apps available.”
