The American Cancer Society Honored local leaders at it’s annual “Legacy of Hope Awards” Banquet on August 8th at Robinson Ranch.

This years honorees included Roger Seaver from Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Cheri & Don Fleming of Valencia Acura and Carl and Jeri Serratti-Goldman of KHTS 1220 AM.

All were honored for there work with the American Cancer Society here in the Santa Clarita Valley.

When asked how the honorees were chosen, Santa Clarita Unit President of the American Cancer Society Candy Spahr said, “We look at people within the community that support the mission and goals of the American Cancer Society.”

Henry Mayo’s Roger Seaver won the award for his “Leadership in Health Care”. Seaver praised the group, saying “It’s one of the finest volunteer groups I’ve ever seen.”

The society itself supports cancer patients and their families through a variety of services including counseling, transportation, and family support services.

The dinner banquet was not only an opportunity for the society to thank it’s supporters and volunteers, but it also served as a fundraiser.

Spahr said the goal was to raise around $80,000 through ticket sales, silent and live auctions and the cancer challenge program. This is a program at the dinner where envelopes are left on the table and attendees are encouraged to place donations in the envelopes to help further the societies work.

Guests and honorees alike were treated to great food, music from the Local Yokels Band, and a Can Can performance from local youth.

Along with the annual Relay for Life event, the society holds the awards dinner to allow a great opportunity for the community to help support a great organization.
