SANTA CLARITA- The College of the Canyons softball team had three players sign letters of intent. Sophomore outfielders Melissa Herndon and Whitney Bruce, and sophomore pitcher Ashley Imperial.
Melissa Herndon is taking her skills to the University of Albany in New York. The West Ranch High product leaves COC as one of the most decorated softball players after being named a two-time All-Conference outfielder, 2010 Western State Conference Player of the Year, First-Team All-State and an All-American in her sophomore season. Herndon finished the 2010 season with a .446 batting average, five home runs, four triples and 41 runs batted in.

Ashley Imperial will take a spot on the pitching staff at Morehead State University in Kentucky. Imperial led the way for the Cougars on the mound with an 18-7 record. In 29 games, she pitched 147.2 innings with 97 strike outs, and an earned run average of 2.55 on her way to her second straight Western State Conference Pitcher of the Year award.

Whitney Bruce will head to the east coast as she has committed to the New York Institute of Technology. Bruce was second on the team in hitting with a .397 batting average. She had three home runs, six triples and led the team with 11 stolen bases.

COC head softball coach John Wissmath was very pleased with his players’ accomplishments.

“This is a testament of the COC softball program and the will of the three ladies. Whitney, Melissa and Ashley worked hard for two years, and I am sure that they are prepared to compete at the next level,” Wissmath said.
